Howrah to dump garbage at Kolkata’s Dhapa, door-to-door collection begins April 1

In a significant step towards improving waste management, the Howrah Municipal Corporation (HMC) has announced the expansion of door-to-door garbage collection services to 14 more wards starting April 1. Currently available in 11 wards, this initiative aims to modernize the city’s sanitation infrastructure and ensure a cleaner environment for residents.

The decision was made during a high-level meeting at HMC on Thursday, attended by key officials, including representatives from the State Urban Development Authority (SUDA). The meeting was convened in response to the recent controversy over garbage dumping in Shibpur’s Arupara and focused on finding long-term waste disposal solutions for the city.

Addressing the media after the meeting, HMC Administrative Board Chairman Dr. Sujay Chakraborty announced that all of Howrah’s garbage will now be regularly disposed of at Kolkata’s Dhapa grounds. This move comes after residents protested against the unhygienic conditions caused by waste accumulation in Shibpur.

However, concerns were raised by the waste collection agency regarding the increased cost of transporting garbage to Dhapa. In response, SUDA assured financial assistance to cover the additional expenditure, ensuring that the transition remains smooth and does not burden the local administration.

To further enhance waste management, Dr. Chakraborty announced that additional dumpers will be procured, and the number of sanitation workers will be increased to improve garbage collection and transportation efficiency. As part of the initiative, SUDA will also provide HMC with 20 mobile compactors and 34 tripper vans to streamline the city’s waste disposal system.

Beyond waste management, SUDA has committed to repairing several roads across Howrah, addressing another major concern of residents. These efforts mark a comprehensive approach to improving sanitation and infrastructure, reinforcing the city’s commitment to better urban living standards.
